In addition, ageism is alive and well. That presents a challenge to hiring managers and recruiters who are trying to draw in talent from across the demographic spectrum. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/techhub.dice.com\/2018-DI-Report-erc.html\">Dice Diversity and Inclusion Survey<\/a> points out, Baby Boomers and Generation X-ers are the most at-risk groups for age discrimination. (Nearly 4,000 tech pros responded to the survey across the United States and United Kingdom.) <a class=\"button expanded\" href=\"https:\/\/techhub.dice.com\/2018-DI-Report-erc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download Dice\u2019s Diversity and Inclusion Report Now!<\/a> Some 68 percent of Baby Boomers say they\u2019re discouraged from applying for jobs due to age. Around 40 percent of those who belong to Generation X feel ageism is affecting their ability to earn a living. And 29 percent of all respondents say they\u2019ve \u201cexperienced or witnessed\u201d ageism in their current workplace or most recent employer. Distilling the results further, the survey found those in their late 40s (ages 46 through 49, specifically) were particularly affected. Of this group, a staggering 80 percent say they\u2019re concerned their age (and ageism attitudes) will affect their careers. But why do tech pros feel such discrimination? Self-reported data often doesn\u2019t answer \u2018why\u2019 someone responds a certain way, but there\u2019s ample evidence of ageism in tech. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/silicon-valley-writer-sounds-off-tech-ageism\">In an interview with Dice<\/a>, Dan Lyons, a former journalist and writer for HBO\u2019s \u201cSilicon Valley,\u201d said that older tech pros may feel like time has passed them by. \u201cOn the one hand, I kind of feel like I\u2019m better at what I do now than I was when I was 35, but I also get that I\u2019m probably not as opted-in,\u2019 he said. \u201cI think it starts with those guys\u2014the investors, what they want and what they push for,\u201d Lyons added. \u201cI think they\u2019ve all decided that the optimal return is young kids: Burn them out, get rid of them, replace them.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/expanded-lawsuit-alleges-ageism-facebook\">Even job postings are potentially discriminatory<\/a>. A recent lawsuit filed by the Communications Workers of America claims that Facebook, one of the largest digital ads marketplaces on Earth, is filtering job ads to a younger crowd, violating fair employment laws in the process. For recruiters and hiring managers, an awareness of the ageism issues in tech is key.
