Worse yet, they\u2019re more unhappy than waitresses, janitors or bellhops.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Web developers and tech support analysts are also frustrated: They have to deal with employees and executives who don\u2019t understand the technology. And technical specialists say they\u2019re on-call 24 hours a day. Though they try to help people resolve their problems, they feel they&#8217;re treated with a \u201cpalpable level of disrespect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how can you help retain these folks? First, <a title=\"How to Create a Better Workplace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/cutting-edge-leadership\/201009\/how-create-better-workplace\" target=\"_blank\">nurture a culture of mutual<\/a> respect by maintaining transparent hiring and promotional practices, encouraging executives to hold focus groups and openly\u00a0communicate, and\u00a0having zero tolerance for workplace bullying.<\/p>\n<p>Second, recognize top performers and give them\u00a0tools to develop a career plan so they don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re stuck in a cubicle and a\u00a0dead-end job.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a title=\"Holding On to Your Flight Risks \" href=\"http:\/\/www.hreonline.com\/HRE\/story.jsp?storyId=533341164\" target=\"_blank\">recent survey<\/a>, only 9 percent of business leaders strongly agreed that their companies do a good job of identifying and tracking top-performing and high-potential employees. It\u2019s no wonder that many IT professionals feel unappreciated or ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, encourage job shadowing, lunch and learn sessions, and learning partnerships so employees understand each others&#8217; roles and responsibilities.
