So that begs the question: What\u2019s the key to recognizing and defusing violent incidents before they occur?<\/p>\n<p>In a report published in the journal <em>Advances in Developing Human Resources<\/em>, Martin B. Kormanik, a consultant and HR specialist who heads the consulting firm O.D. Systems, says companies need to assess their current status and plan initiatives based on employees\u2019awareness level of workplace violence.<\/p>\n<p>He argues that\u00a0HR should start by surveying employees to see where they fit into one of these five stages of awareness, then\u00a0use the information to tailor training and incident\u00a0response programs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pre-encounter: little to no knowledge of workplace violence.<\/li>\n<li>Intellectualization: knowledge but no experience with workplace violence.<\/li>\n<li>Encounter: experience with workplace violence.<\/li>\n<li>Empowerment: seeking strategies to adapt or cope after workplace violence.<\/li>\n<li>Integration: regaining a sense of control after workplace violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Kormanik\u2019s study, most of the participants fell into the intellectualization stage, which means they need basic education to\u00a0recognize and report behaviors that may\u00a0lead to workplace violence.<\/p>\n<p>For more information check out Kormanik\u2019s <a title=\"InterventionsWorkplace Violence: Assessing Organizational Awareness and Planning\" href=\"http:\/\/adh.sagepub.com\/content\/13\/1\/114.full.pdf+html\">complete report <\/a>or <a title=\"Workplace Violence Prevention \" href=\"http:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/stats-services\/publications\/law-enforcement-bulletin\/january2011\/workplace_violence_prevention\">the information on violence prevention\u00a0for employers provided by the FBI.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems like workplace violence is an ever-present threat despite HR&#8217;s sometimes heroic planning and educational efforts.
