But now, there\u2019s quantifiable proof that\u00a0severe cost\u00a0cutting can\u00a0diminish employees&#8217;\u00a0trust in company leaders and negatively impact the bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Employees who don\u2019t trust their executives are seven times more likely to miss\u00a0work due to stress, and nine times more likely to consider leaving the organization, according to a <a title=\"Trust Matters\" href=\"http:\/\/khpi.com\/documents\/KHPI-WorkTrends-Report-Trust-Matters\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a>\u00a0of 31,000 global employees by <a title=\"Kenexa High Performance Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/khpi.com\/\">Kenexa High Performance Institute<\/a>. But even though trust is the recognized\u00a0cornerstone of productive working relationships, the survey found that\u00a0only 48 percent of employees\u00a0trust their leaders while 28 percent actively distrust them. Some 24 percent aren&#8217;t sure. Ouch!<\/p>\n<p>The report defines trust as employees\u2019 willingness to accept risk in anticipation of a leader\u2019s behavior &#8212; for example, they remain with the company during lean times because they believe the leadership will pull it through\u00a0the economic\u00a0slump.<\/p>\n<p>The odds that an employee trusts senior leadership doubles if the organization has a published mission statement, conducts regular\u00a0opinion surveys, sponsors quality improvement initiatives, gathers customer feedback, conducts yearly performance reviews, and has a formal cross-training program. In organizations that use all of these best practices, the odds of an employee trusting management are six times higher than in those that&#8217;s don&#8217;t engage in any.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HR professionals\u00a0know that broken promises can erode morale and engagement.
