Worse still, 81 percent say conflict leads to turnover and 77 percent believe it\u00a0causes\u00a0absenteeism.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s important to keep conflicts in check. How can you act as a mediator and negotiate a settlement when employees disagree? Try this path:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to the relationship first<\/strong> and the issue second by maintaining control and approaching the conflict in a calm, rational manner. Make it clear that you\u2019re only the mediator, and you expect the participants to resolve their own problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have each party state their issues<\/strong>, then repeat them to make sure both sides agree. Then set some ground rules for the discussion, so the participants don\u2019t digress or inject extraneous issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impose a deadline for resolving the conflict<\/strong>, so people don\u2019t waste time arguing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find common ground<\/strong> and check off each item as the participants reach a resolution in order to keep the talks moving.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try role reversal<\/strong> so each participant can consider the other&#8217;s view, or call a brief hiatus and ask them to return with an idea to resolve each remaining issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t focus on who\u2019s right<\/strong> or who\u2019s wrong, focus on solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take notes and send a letter or e-mail<\/strong> confirming the agreement so both parties understand their commitments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be ready to take action<\/strong> if the parties can\u2019t reach a resolution or find a new battleground, because let\u2019s face it, sometimes people just can\u2019t get along.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The payoff: better problem solving among employees, innovation, increased motivation, a better understanding of others and higher team performance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ninety eight percent of HR professionals say they&#8217;re\u00a0called upon to help resolve issues\u00a0according to a survey by Denver-based Employee Development Systems.
