That\u2019s an important thing for recruiters and hiring managers to keep in mind, especially if they\u2019re hiring for startups and fast-growth companies that want tech pros willing to work insane hours.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Indeed, it\u2019s sometimes easy to buy into one of the most fundamental clich\u00e9s of the tech industry: That it\u2019s all about tech pros working long into the night, fueled by Red Bull and snack food, until they finally build that world-changing app. In that context, recruiters might find themselves lulled into the idea that tech pros are fine with working extraordinary hours.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But  <a href=\"https:\/\/insights.stackoverflow.com\/survey\/2019?utm_source=so-owned utm_medium=blog utm_campaign=dev-survey-2019 utm_content=launch-blog#technology\">a new study from Stack Overflow<\/a>  suggests that the bulk of developers (i.e., 51.7 percent) work 40 to 44 hours per week. Another 13.4 percent work 35-39 hours, and 11.6 percent work between 45 and 49 hours. Although specific ranges might vary depending on whom you ask, people would generally agree that between 35-50 hours constitutes a \u201cnormal work week,\u201d and these developers are working it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Only 2.5 percent worked between 60 and 69 hours per week, meanwhile, and 2.0 percent worked 70 hours or more. \u201cSenior executives, product managers, and engineering managers are more likely to work longer hours, as well as developers in Eastern Europe, India, and the United States,\u201d Stack Overflow added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Even if the majority of developers (this question on the Stack Overflow survey had 64,503 respondents) work reasonable hours, there\u2019s a debate raging about overwork in the tech industry, reignited (because it\u2019s never really gone away) by Alibaba founder Jack Ma\u2019s recent comments endorsing \u201c996,\u201d a Chinese-centric practice of working from 9 AM to 9 PM, six days per week.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cRewards of hard work,\u201d  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/15\/business\/jack-ma-996-china\/index.html\">Ma said<\/a>, come to those developers who put in that punishing level of hours.    <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The recent disaster of BioWare\u2019s \u201cAnthem\u201d video game also highlights the issue of developer burnout. Thanks to reported \u201cindecision and mismanagement\u201d (in the words of anonymous sources  <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964\">speaking to Kotaku<\/a>) among leadership, the game\u2019s developers ended up  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/game-dev-crunch-time-crisis-anthem-woes\">working months of hellacious \u201ccrunch time,\u201d<\/a>  hoping that everything would come together in the end\u2014but the final product was still a disaster. In other words, 70+ hour weeks aren\u2019t a surefire solution to tech challenges, no matter what Ma and his supporters might say.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Some critics see overwork as a cultural issue: Companies need products to launch in order to make money, and sometimes that means pushing developers to churn out code on extremely tight deadlines. \u201cI think it starts with those guys\u2014the investors, what they want and what they push for. I think they\u2019ve all decided that the optimal return is young kids:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/tech-burnout-root-cause-beyond-overwork\">Burn them out<\/a>, get rid of them, replace them,\u201d author Dan Lyons  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/silicon-valley-writer-sounds-off-tech-ageism\">told Dice back in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Despite those controversies\u2014and the very real cases of workers  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/adult-health\/in-depth\/burnout\/art-20046642\">frying in order<\/a> to push out games of questionable quality\u2014it seems most developers are actually working perfectly reasonable hours. For recruiters and hiring managers, that\u2019s an important thing to take into consideration; not all candidates will feel motivated to take a job that demands crazy hours (and that&#8217;s even before you get into a <a href=\"pay-doesnt-match-value-tech-pros\">discussion of pay<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Few developers feel the need to work 80+ hour workweeks.
