That\u2019s an important question for hiring managers and recruiters who need to determine where to set their own companies\u2019 salaries for all-star talent.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/SE\/Microsoft\/Google\/Facebook\">According to levels.fyi<\/a>, which crowd-sources salary information, Microsoft pays its engineers who hit level 67 (i.e., principal software development engineer) roughly $222,714 in salary, along with $226,000 per year in stock options, and a bonus of $73,143.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Those at Microsoft who climb to level 69\u2014making them a full-fledged \u201cpartner\u201d\u2014can make $270,000, with a stock grant of $500,000 and a bonus of $140,000 (although the levels.fyi database only has data from a single respondent at that level).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Compare that to Google, where software engineers at the L7 level (a senior manager role; roughly equivalent to Microsoft\u2019s level 67) can expect to pull down $256,059 in annual salary, $286,176 in stock, and a bonus of $83,294. Those who ascend yet another level to full-on director (L8) can enjoy total compensation of roughly $800,000 (but as with Microsoft level 69, there are few L8 respondents to levels.fyi, making it difficult to get an accurate grasp of salaries at this level).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Once employees climb to this height, of course, they\u2019re likely more of a manager than a developer or engineer. Some tech professionals might not like this if all they want to do is build and code. For others, though, there\u2019s nothing better than managing a team that knows exactly what it\u2019s doing, and has significant challenges to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Have a look at this chart that breaks down their salaries:<\/p>\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\n<iframe aria-label=\"Table\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"283\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-IwQiN\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/IwQiN\/1\/\" title=\"Senior Software Engineer Salaries, Microsoft Level 67 vs. Google L7\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var e in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var t=document.getElementById(\"datawrapper-chart-\"+e)||document.querySelector(\"iframe[src*='\"+e+\"']\");t  (t.style.height=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][e]+\"px\")}})}();<\/script>\n<\/pre>\n\n\n<p>Salary-wise, level 67 is a pretty steep upgrade from a Microsoft SDE, which is the software-engineering position that candidates would land right after graduating college;  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/microsoft-engineers-earn-salaries\">they\u2019re paid $130,287 as a base salary<\/a>, supplemented with a $16,824 average signing bonus and four-year stock options totaling $25,902.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/how-much-do-google-entry-level-jobs-actually-pay\">Google<\/a>, by comparison, pays entry-level engineers an average of $115,000, combined with a $44,000 signing bonus, stock options worth $139,000, and an annual bonus of $22,000.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Of course, specializing in certain in-demand skills will boost salaries still higher, even for senior engineers making quite a bit of money.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/jobs\/q-Artificial+Intelligence-jobs\">Artificial intelligence<\/a>  (A.I.) and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/jobs\/q-Machine+learning-jobs\">machine learning<\/a>  (ML) expertise, for instance, can result in multi-million-dollar paychecks, for instance, once you  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/career-advice\/artificial-intelligence-experts-how-much-can-they-earn\">factor in perks and benefits<\/a>  such as stock bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that tech giants like Microsoft pay their top software engineers a lot of money. And, for some tech pros, salary is the most important factor when looking for their next opportunity.
