But as a recruiter, you may inadvertently repel the very people you\u2019re trying to attract if you commit one or more of these critical blunders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe candidate population is very candid about what they like and don\u2019t like,\u201d explained Matthew Ripaldi, senior regional VP for Modis, a tech-staffing agency. \u201cThey\u2019re really turned off by the fact that recruiters are bombarding them on social media, especially application developers who claim recruiters are driving them nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you obtain maximum value from your social media outreach, here are seven key mistakes to avoid when recruiting tech professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-becoming-a-one-trick-pony\">Becoming a One-Trick Pony<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of picking up the phone and having a conversation with a candidate, many recruiters have become totally reliant on social media. As a result, they don\u2019t know the first thing about tech professionals or their career interests before they pitch them a job. Savvy recruiters understand that social media has its place, but they use good old-fashioned face-to-face meetings and phone calls to get to know a candidate\u2019s career objectives and build rapport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bombarding-candidates\">Bombarding Candidates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you uncover a hot candidate on a social networking site, you&#8217;ll annoy them and will eventually cause them to tune you out if you send a stream of private messages and in-mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA <a href=\"descriptions-mobile-developer\">developer<\/a> will not even bother responding if you blast them with messages on Twitter,\u201d Ripaldi said. \u201cAnd they really hate it when recruiters send them impersonal in-mail messages that have clearly copy-and-pasted from a template.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re initial social outreach doesn\u2019t work, try a different approach. And customize your messages so you don\u2019t become a \u201cspammer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-offering-relevant-content\">Not Offering Relevant Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you offering candidates valuable information, or are you simply pitching them a laundry list of jobs? Third-party recruiting firms in particular should be able to position themselves as thought leaders and experts by providing market intelligence, salary information and resume tips that help candidates land their dream jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember the 80\/20 rule: 80 percent of your <a href=\"candidate-journey-content\">content<\/a> should be educational and only 20 percent promotional. Think about it like a marketer &#8211; identify your specific audience&#8217;s needs or pain points, and specifically address them in your communications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:45% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dice.com\/binaries\/content\/gallery\/dice\/insights\/2019\/12\/Dice_Ebook_Recruiting-Tech-Talent-With-A-Marketing-Mindset_Page_01-1-1024x792.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-197772 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-even-more-insight-download-dice-s-ebook-recruiting-tech-talent-with-a-marketing-mindset\">Get even more insight. <a href=\"https:\/\/techhub.dice.com\/Dice-eBook_Recruiting-Tech-Talent-With-A-Marketing-Mindset_Gated.html\">Download Dice&#8217;s eBook, Recruiting Tech Talent with a Marketing Mindset.<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lack-of-tech-credit\">Lack of Tech Credit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to recruit tech professionals, you need to speak their language, said Katrina Collier, a social recruiting specialist and founder of Winning Impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the recruiter\u2019s responsibility to make an effort to learn about the technical requirements and platform before they post a job or approach a candidate on social media,\u201d she added. \u201cTechnical people are logical, algorithm-minded thinkers, so you need to use precise wording to describe a position not touchy-feely words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spend time with a <a href=\"database-developer-interview-questions\">developer<\/a> to get up to speed, or ask someone from your tech team to explain the role and responsibilities to the candidate, Collier suggested. But whatever you do, don\u2019t misrepresent your technical abilities or your credibility will be totally shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t know something about a project, admit it,\u201d Ripaldi said. \u201cBecause if you state something that\u2019s not accurate, it will really turn a tech pro off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-the-box-screening-techniques\">Check-the-Box Screening Techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many recruiters insult tech professionals by asking them a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/techhub.dice.com\/Dice-eBook_Digging-Deeper-Technical-Interview-Questions_Gated.html\">\u201cknockout\u201d questions<\/a> after finding them on social media. If the candidate has the right skills, they immediately pitch them a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou should already know that information before you reach out,\u201d Collier said. \u201cRecruiters should confirm three things that indicate that a tech professional is well-suited for a job opening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social aggregation tools such as Dice\u2019s Open Web pull together data from more than 130 social sites so you can easily find background information about tech candidates with very little legwork. Plus, they allow you to drill deeper into sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\">GitHub<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dribbble.com\/\">Dribbble<\/a>, so you can see a candidate\u2019s code or design work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asking-for-referrals-right-off-the-bat\">Asking for Referrals Right Off the Bat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re asking for referrals from strangers on social media, you\u2019re offending your audience and committing an unforgivable faux pas. Referrals are based on trust and a successful working relationship, which means you must earn the right to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-empty-social-media-profiles\">Empty Social Media Profiles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You expect a candidate to have an up-to-date professional profile and photo, but is yours incomplete? A tech pro is bound to check out your qualifications and reputation before responding to your initial outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reputation economy is here,\u201d Collier noted. \u201cYou need to represent yourself in an authentic and transparent way because your reputation as a recruiter is your most valuable asset.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recruiters have the best of intentions when they try to connect with tech professionals on social media.
