The Dice Tech Salary Report<\/a>\u00a0is designed to help employers\u00a0and recruiters\u00a0stay\u00a0up-to-date\u00a0on the tech hiring and retention\u00a0landscape, and\u00a0provides technologists with the information they need to better understand their market value and how to position themselves for\u00a0career growth. The report\u00a0is based on a survey of\u00a0more than 9,000\u00a0technologists, and\u00a0includes data and analysis on\u00a0salary\u00a0by location, occupation, skill and experience level, as well as technologist perception\u00a0on compensation-related items, such as salary satisfaction\u00a0and\u00a0benefits received.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Established\u00a0and Emerging Tech Hubs\u00a0Bustle to Meet Demand\u00a0<\/strong>
\nThe nation\u2019s technologists in\u00a0both\u00a0established\u00a0and emerging tech hubs saw their salaries increase significantly during 2020,\u00a0although the\u00a0nation\u2019s most prominent tech hubs are\u00a0still the\u00a0destination\u00a0for technologists seeking\u00a0the highest salaries.\u00a0In\u00a0New York City, the average technologist salary\u00a0rose 11.6%\u00a0between 2019 and 2020, hitting $114,274.\u00a0Boston salaries have reached $111,069, while Silicon Valley\u2019s average pay stands at $126,801, making it the highest-paying tech hub in the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Boston and Silicon Valley both achieved salary growth of 2.4%, cementing their status as established tech hubs.\u00a0In Austin, salaries rose 9.7%\u00a0to\u00a0$104,344\u00a0during the same period.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Emerging\u00a0tech hubs\u00a0also saw\u00a0some of the highest\u00a0growth during the year, including areas like Charlotte (+13.8%\u00a0to $99,691),\u00a0Orlando (+13.4% to $88,598),\u00a0Detroit (+7.7%, to $90,110) and Houston (+7.1%, to $99,727), where local officials\u00a0have been\u00a0working\u00a0to bolster the tech scene for\u00a0many\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\nAt the state level,\u00a0Texas\u00a0continues its rise to prominence as\u00a0a premier tech state\u00a0(+5.6% YoY), sparking conversations about competition with\u00a0California\u00a0(+1.9% YoY)\u00a0as a primary hub.\u00a0Both states\u2019 tech hubs saw high salaries and steady increases, but Texas\u00a0boasts an\u00a0influx\u00a0of prestigious companies building new headquarters, including Oracle and Tesla.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Remote Work Adaptation,\u00a0Digitization\u00a0Remain Top Priority\u00a0<\/strong>
\nThe occupations\u00a0and skills that saw\u00a0the\u00a0largest salary increases between 2019 and 2020 were those that\u00a0helped organizations\u00a0organize\u00a0and analyze data, digitize and\u00a0otherwise evolve\u00a0their\u00a0product offerings,\u00a0and ensure that their organizations remained efficient, profitable, safe and\u00a0secure during the pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs employers\u00a0adapted\u00a0to the pandemic\u00a0by\u00a0quickly\u00a0shifting\u00a0to\u00a0remote work, we saw immediate needs for technologists skilled in preparing\u00a0entire\u00a0offices\u00a0and teams\u00a0to go virtual,\u00a0and\u00a0for\u00a0cybersecurity\u00a0experts\u00a0to secure new cloud networks,\u201d\u00a0said Michelle Marian, CMO of DHI Group, Inc., parent company of Dice.\u00a0\u201cAs a result of dispersed teams and networks due to the massive adoption of remote work,\u00a0the need for\u00a0cybersecurity\u00a0and\u00a0cloud-based roles\u00a0grew significantly in 2020, with\u00a0cybersecurity analysts seeing the\u00a0largest salary growth\u00a0during\u00a0the year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cybersecurity Analyst saw an average salary increase to $103,106 in 2020 (+16.3%) and Cloud Engineer roles grew 6.3% to $136,479 in 2020.\u00a0The prevalence of remote work likely also had an impact on Technical Support Engineer salaries, which rose to $68,651 in 2020 (+8.2%).\u00a0As many organizations reacted quickly to changing circumstances\u00a0on account of the pandemic, the need to develop and implement long-term strategies has positively impacted\u00a0Business Analyst salaries, which increased 5.3% to $97,633 in 2020. Driven by the need to\u00a0rapidly transform\u00a0digital stacks,\u00a0Web Developer saw an average salary increase to $81,550 year-over-year (+4.9%),\u00a0Software Developer increased 1.9% to $111,297\u00a0and\u00a0DevOps Engineer roles grew 12.2% to $115,125.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0occupations saw growth due to longer-term needs unrelated to the pandemic. With data becoming increasingly valuable to businesses across nearly every industry, the demand\u00a0has\u00a0swelled\u00a0for Data Scientists\u00a0(+12.8% to $119,898 in 2020)\u00a0who can successfully analyze data in ways that executives and employees can use to\u00a0drive business evolution and growth.\u00a0Similarly, salaries associated with Data Engineers, who are largely responsible for building out and maintaining data infrastructure,\u00a0increased by 4.7% to $118,621 in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
